This update is about two parts of Indigen World that people use every day. Explore now keeps your place: switch topic, check a message or step away for a moment, and you come back to the reel you were watching. My Space is simpler: three places instead of five, with who you are, everything you keep and everything you have given the archive on one page.

ShippedIn Indigen World for Android, version 0.1.28. Update from Google Play; the update may take a day or two to reach every phone. Everything in this post is free for everyone.

What is new at a glance

  • Explore keeps your place. Switching topic, or going to another tab for a moment, brings you back to the reel you left, playing.
  • No more reshuffling. As Explore loads more reels, the ones you have already seen stay where they were.
  • Swipe back without waiting. The reel you just watched is still there, paused where you left it.
  • Double-tap to appreciate. A gold heart appears where your finger lands.
  • My Space is You, Membership and Settings. Your profile, your library and your work are together on You.
  • Translate a word from the first card on Contribute, and follow everything you have sent in one list.
  • Your saved words follow your account to a new phone.

Explore keeps your place

Explore is the full-screen feed of cultural videos and pictures, from the archive and from the community. It could feel as if it jumped about. We found four reasons in the app, and each one is fixed.

Come back to the reel you left

Switch from For you to Music and back, and the feed now opens on a reel that plays straight away. Before, it could come back on a reel that sat still until you swiped.

Leave Explore for another tab, or put your phone down, and come back within a quarter of an hour: you land on the reel you were watching. Stay away longer and Explore starts again at the top, with whatever has been published since.

Want a fresh start sooner? Tap For you or Following at the bottom of Explore while you are already on it, and it takes you to the top of a freshly arranged feed.

A feed that stays in order

Explore arranges reels for you, and it keeps loading more as you go. It used to rearrange everything each time it loaded more, so a reel you had already watched could come round again while another slipped out of sight. Now the order you have been shown stays as it is, and new reels join the end.

Swipe back without waiting

Swipe down to the reel before, and it is still there, paused where you left it, with no spinner while it loads again. To be kind to your phone, Explore lets go of its videos about half a minute after you leave it, and opens them again when you come back.

Double-tap to appreciate

Double-tap a reel to appreciate it, the same as tapping the heart on the right. A gold heart appears where your finger landed. A double-tap only ever adds an appreciation; to take one back, tap the heart on the right. A single tap still pauses the reel, and the buttons on the right answer straight away.

Saving mobile data

If you turn off Play videos automatically in My Space → Settings, Explore now loads only the reel in front of you, and nothing ahead of it or behind it.

More community videos

Explore now asks for community videos directly, so it finds more of them before it starts showing reels a second time.

My Space: You, Membership and Settings

Two phones showing the new You page of My Space. On the left, the top of the page: Amina Ayaribisa's profile with her handle, a short bio, Paga and Paga Kasem, Edit profile and Preview buttons, a card saying 5 of 6 filled in, and counts of 184 contributions, 131 approved and 1,310 points. On the right, further down: Your library with Saved words, Saved posts and Kept reels, and Your work with Sent back to you and Your adverts. At the bottom of both, the bar with You, Membership and Settings
The You page of My Space: who you are at the top, then your library and your work. The profile, the numbers and the submissions are sample data.

Tap your picture in the top right corner of the app to open My Space. It used to have five places along the bottom: Overview, Profile, Adverts, Membership and Settings. Now it has three.

You

You brings together what Overview and Profile used to split between them. At the top is your community profile: your picture, your name and handle, the words you wrote about yourself, where you are and the Kasem you speak. Edit profile changes it; Preview shows you exactly what other people see. If your profile is missing something worth adding, a card says what, and it goes away once everything is there.

Under that are three numbers: your contributions, how many were approved, and your points. Tap any of them to see the list behind it. The counts now include everything you have sent; they used to stop at fifty, which an active translator passes in an evening.

Your library

Everything you keep is in one place: Saved words from the dictionary, Saved posts from Community, Kept reels from Explore, and, if your membership includes them, your Downloads.

Your work

Your adverts is here now, as a row, rather than a place of its own on the bar. If a reviewer sends one of your submissions back with a note, a Sent back to you row appears too, and takes you straight to it.

Membership and Settings

Membership is the plans, as before. Settings is shorter: saved posts and downloads live in your library now, and Find people is where it has always been in Community. The Settings row in Community's menu now opens this same page.

Contributing

Two phones. On the left, the Contribute tab: Top contributors, then Translate a word (We give you a word, you give us the Kasem. One after another.), Submit to Collections and Your submissions with 2 in review. On the right, Your submissions with filters for All, In review, Needs changes and Approved, and four submissions: kukuri (Dictionary, needs changes, with a reviewer's note), Harvest song from Chiana (Music, under review), nabiina (Dictionary, published) and How the crocodiles of Paga came to stay (Literature, approved)
Left: Translate a word is the first card on Contribute. Right: everything you have sent, in one list with four filters. The names and submissions are sample data.

Translate a word, one tap away

Thousands of words are waiting for their Kasem. Translate a word gives you one English word at a time, and you give the Kasem. It used to be behind Submit to Collections; now it is the first card on the Contribute tab. A few words while you wait for the kettle is a real contribution.

One list of what you have sent

There used to be two lists of your submissions, one in My Space and one in Contribute, that looked different and did different things. Now there is one. Filter it by In review, Needs changes or Approved, read a reviewer's note, and withdraw something if you need to. Tapping Approved on the You page opens it already filtered.

Smaller changes

  • Your saved words follow your account. Sign in, and the words you save are kept with your account, not only on this phone. Words you saved before signing in join your account the first time you sign in on that phone.
  • Signing out is safer on a shared phone. Signing out now always stops this phone receiving that account's alerts. Sign out is in My Space → Settings.
  • Tidier Collection. A shelf with nothing on it yet, such as the Shop, stays out of the way until something is added.
  • Fewer technical details. Settings no longer shows the app's technical signature or the name of the server it talks to. The project team can still find them when they need to.
About the picturesThe screens above were drawn from the new app code with sample data: the profile, the numbers, the contributors and the submissions are examples, not real members. The photograph in the Explore reel is of the Tono dam irrigation channel, by Apiu Akwojong Ezekiel, from Wikimedia Commons (CC0).
